Tips for Safely Moving your Aquarium

Your pets are your beloved pals, and when moving homes, you can never imagine leaving them behind whether they are furry or scaly beings. If you own pet fish moving the aquarium can be tricky especially if it is a large one. Lack of proper planning can not only damage your aquarium but also cause your scaly pets to die.

Whether you are moving across the town or to a different emirate, we have listed practical tips to help you successfully move your aquarium plus keep your fish happy and healthy during the move.

Before the move

Aquariums, made of glass, are fragile items that need extreme care during home relocations. Before you begin the packing process, keep all supplies ready such as a fishnet, hose, transparent bags/jars/buckets, packing paper and moving boxes to empty the tank.

Containing your fish

Gently remove your fish from the tank with a net and place them in special plastic bags or transparent containers. Bigger fish can be moved into sturdy buckets with lids. Tape the containers well to avoid any spills or leaks. Refrain from feeding your fish 24-48 hours before the move so that the compact containers don’t get further contaminated with waste.

Clean and pack the tank

Using a hose to drain all the water out in the sink a day before the move. To pack the tank for moving, unplug everything and remove the pebbles, plants and accessories. All items must be cleaned and wiped dry with towels. Pack the tank, light, pump and other items carefully with bubble wrap and paper. Place all items into a box stuffed with enough cloth padding to prevent damage.

During the move

We recommend you always transport the tank and fish in your vehicle, just to keep them extra safe. However, if you wish the movers packers to transport the aquarium tank, label the box with its components and use stickers such as ‘fragile/handle with care’ so they are extra cautious when handling the box.

After the move

Once you reach your new home, immediately set up the tank and install the water pumps before you add your fish. Arrange the pebbles, plants and other items. Carefully scoop your fish out of the bucket with the net and place them in the tank. If you’ve moved the fish in bags, submerge them in water to let the fish make their way out.

Lastly, install the cover and lighting for the fish to adjust to their new surroundings. Feed your fish and observe their movements for a while before placing the tank in an area of the house.

I hope you found these tips helpful for moving your aquarium. Even though the process is daunting, a little planning and some help can make it as stress-free as possible for yourself and your fish!
