Seclude them away from the noise
Being sensitive creatures, too much noise or commotion can scare birds. The sudden appearance of boxes and screeching furniture shifting sounds can make them so anxious that they can even refuse food. It’s best you place them in a quiet closed room to not allow the inevitable chaos to disturb them. This way they’ll be less stressed and go about their feed, play and sleep routine.
Prepare their cage
Hours before the move prepare their cages by washing or clearing away any dirt. Detach their food and water containers, as they’re likely to spill during bumps and turns of travel. Instead, keep fruits with high water content during the journey to ensure a vitamin rich diet.
Pack the cage for transportation
You can always place the cage in a thin box punctured with large holes to allow fresh air inside. Be very careful when handling them so as to avoid sudden movements that could frighten them. Also, the best way to transport them is in your own vehicle if moving within the city, if not label the box distinctly ‘Live Birds Inside’ to let the packers and movers know this requires special handling.
Post-move care
By nature, birds are a territorial species and hence they’ll have a hard time adjusting to new environments. Given the several changes they’ve been through in the past few days, they’ll surely be stressed. Hence soon after you arrive in your new home unpack their cage and keep them in a quiet place near plants or the window to acclimatize to the surroundings. Also, give them an additional nutritious diet to help them cope and overcome the stressful period.
Don’t forget to watch your bird closely for a few days and if they exhibit strange behaviour do take them to a vet.
